Electronic ignition

Morning all Looking at fittng electronic ignition to my gp to replace the 6volt set up it still runs on for all the usual reasons.I am looking at the casa variable set up at around £300 is it worth the extra to go for the variable set on a standard set up? Thanks in advance.

why not just go for a std electronic with medium weight flywheel . simple.

Well yes that was my first thought not knowing enough myself I am hoping someone will be able to explain in simple terms if there is an advantage to the casa type of set up.

You can use af mid weight flywheel with indian or other stator, the casa variant is good but for best buy id go electrex kit @£350 modern Japanese style stator with one piece flywheel, work excellent in ac or dc with battery.
Its a fit n forget part with no issues on pick up alignment or rivetts failing

I'd go for the AF kit with a mid weight flywheel. Can't see much point in variable unless you're tuning the balls off it. The standard electronic kit will transform it enough.

Go for the basic electronic kit and put the rest of the money towards a decent a front brake.

So the next question what is the benefits of the different weight flywheels ?

A mid weight flywheel will allow the engine to pick up a bit better whilst retaining enough rotating mass to smooth the revs out at low speed. I light weigh flywheel really only suits very high revving engines.

Mid weight flywheels start out as standard full weight Indian (SIL) flywheels and are then turned down on a lathe to reduce weight. Should cost around £70-£80 from suppliers like Scooter Restorations, Just Lambretta etc. For a stator I would be tempted to pick up a cheap new or even used SIL stator and send it to Anthony Tambs (I'm not sure if he is on here but you will find him on Face Book) he renovates stators with new coils and wiring and his work is second to none and very reasonably priced. Add in a decent CDI and even if you added one of the variable ignition modules available you will get a lot of change out of £200 including the flywheel. That's what I would do anyway

Anthony is on Lambretta Tuning page on F/B. He's also developed a stator with pickup on the outside of the flywheel to make setting the timing much easier. A good point of this is that you can have the original pickup still in place [though disconnected] and should the external pickup fail you can switch over to the internal pickup. You can have one of them set for static timing and one for variable timing. Also does the stators with extra wire for Wasell AC/DC conversions to run sat navs / phone chargers etc or full DC with a battery fitted. Engines that were previously difficult to start have been vastly improved by the external pick up.
