Mugello 186 or 198

Postby inch71 » Mon Jul 07, 2014 8:10 pm

Hi

I have a 1961 Series 2 LI 150/175.
The 175 kit I'm running at the moment is quite a few years old now, & I'm looking at upgrading this coming winter. After doing some research, I've decided that the Mugello kit would be best suited to my needs.
I was just wondering whether I would be better to run the 186 or the 198. Cambridge Lambretta's page, say's the 198 gives slightly more speed & torque, but I've heard others say there's hardly any difference between them, & the 186 would be more than adequate.
If any of you have had any experience with either or both of the kits, I would be interested to hear your thoughts.
I'm planning on running it through a 28mm Dellorto, & changing my 42mm Clubman for a JL or PM type exhaust.

Thanks in advance for any replies

Lee

I don't have a preference but I would say that from experience they run better with a 26 phbh.

Ive ran both on my Li150 Special and both ran well,i made sure the squish was right on both and did 2000 miles on the 186 and have done around 500 miles on the 198.I would say there isnt a massive amount between them, maybe a little more torque on the 198 but both are excellent kits and have been very reliable.Ive ran mine with a 26mm Dellorto and ram air filter and JL3 but i keep reverting back to an ancillotti pipe as i prefer a torquey engine.
The 186 seems more popular and available with dealers though as some people arent keen on the thin spigot that the 198 has i guess

I would just be prepared if you go down the mugello route you may have to do some cutting / shutting to the exhaust hanger due to some having the exhaust port deeper / in a different position to standard.

http://scooterotica.org/forum/viewtopic ... 4&p=121244 is one such thread on the subject :-(

I've just bought a 1961 s2 with a 186 mugello running a 26mm dellorto and remote filter and a ancellotti pipe,we'll happy with it sits all day at 60-65 if you want to,need to get it on a dyno as it seems a bit rich,if there is anyone with the same set up could you please give me your carb settings, thanks.

Certainly something to think about, reading that thread. Are there any expansion pipes that do fit without the hassle of cutting or grinding?

Yes on both my 186 & 198 i had to re drill the main bracket holes on my JL3 and cut the manifold pipe down slightly to fit.Right pig! The Ancillotti fitted like a glove on both though :o

This is why my next engine won't be a muggy.

I run my 198 kit on a 30mm dellorto with a JL3 pipe. No fettling required apart from to rear footboard cut out to miss the pipe. Set up by Armandos and never let me down in 1800 miles. Ive heard people saying the 186 kit was miles better but i'm happy with mine. Dyno'ed last year at 15.6 BHP. Not the fastest scoot in the world but its good enough for me. Not that i'd know anyway cos the speedo does what it wants but thats another story.

I'm still thinking the best kit for my needs is going to be the Mugello.
Still not sure whether the 198 is going to be any better than the 186 though. I think the 186 is the more proven of the 2, just because it's been around longer. The extra torque the 198 should have over the 186 would be nice, but is it as reliable?

I would say so mate, mines been great so far and a lad in our club has a 198 with a Sterling pipe and has thrashed the nuts off it for over 2000 miles with no issues. As long as they are put together and jetted right i think they are good kits

Glad you mentioned the Sterling pipe. How does your mate find that. I've seen these recently, & wondered if they'd be any good

inch71 the sterling is quite a revvy pipe so you might find you have to thrash it to keep it in the power (as the previous poster states his mate does with his). I had SS steerling myself a while back and found it to be a pretty well made pipe , cant speak for anyone else though.

My Mugello 186 has been trouble free for 5,000 miles. Run it with an AF Clubman and now an Ancelotti exhaust with no fitment problems.

Cheers Kev

I'm running with an AF Clubman at the minute with a 175 kit & 22mm Jetex. What Carb you running with the Clubman, & what sort of power you getting?
