Quieter Pipe??

Postby Hughieboy » Fri Aug 29, 2025 3:08 pm

Looking for exhaust advice…
I’m running a GT186 motor with a GT race crank, 30mil Dellorto, Reedspeed clutch, etc. and a Avanti Ex Box with tail can in my S2.
The scooter runs great in every way and has been reliable, so no complaints about performance.
It’s just the noise of it is starting to get on my nerves! I know that sounds daft but as I get older I’d quite like to be less conspicuous on occasions and the Avanti pipe is anything but that! I know it’s not as noisy as a Gori or whatever but it’s still loud and I’ve never thought it had the nicest sound, it always sounded like it was blowing even though it’s not, it doesn’t have the ‘ring ding ding’ of an expansion for instance.

Is there anything quieter out there that I could fit without sacrificing performance?
I was under the impression that BGM Clubman’s for instance might be quieter but were restrictive due to the tailpipe bore size so I’m not keen on going that way. And the Ex Box definitely performs very well…

I use it a lot as transport on the back of our motorhome for me and the Missus, it’s just not really campsite friendly due to the racket it makes. Anyone got any suggestions? Is it possible to get quieter without losing performance or does one just go with the other?

I suppose I could always get a Royal Alloy….. lol…

I used to run a GT186 with both a v1 bgm/ MB Clubman and a Ron Moss Avanti. I always thought the bgm/MB was better suited to the characteristics of the engine. The Ron Moss put performance too much at the top end and acceleration in the lower gears suffered.

From memory, whilst they had a different tone to each other, they were both reasonably noisy.

An AF 42mm Clubman would be quieter but they do have a tinny sound and performance would suffer.

Other than earplugs, I’m not sure if there is a magic answer to this question but then I don’t have knowledge of all the exhaust choices out there.

Thanks. I thought that might be the case but new stuff is always coming out so it’s always worth asking.

Before you ‘throw out the bath water with the baby in it’ you might consider the muffler you have not doing it’s job.

If the muffler you have, is as depicted on your Avatar, then that is by no means a short - or ‘economically sized’ - underslung type.

Have you tried repacking? Experience shows that the smaller bore mufflers also tend to be loudest, but you really ought to be running an inch internal diameter IMO.

If the muffler is the only real culprit, you really should be able to fix it or find a quieter alternative. Last time I looked, there was always loads of crosser type that could be made to fit on auction sites etc…..

Unfortunately that’s an older photo showing a TSR Evo pipe, not the Ron Moss Avanti which is currently fitted. It has a tail cam but it’s only small and not that effective.
