Postby Scoot655 » Tue Sep 02, 2014 7:36 pm

Have a mugello 225 kit fitted,28mm delly,46x16 gearing with a gp150 box and a pm pipe.pulls well but revs out at about 65mph.going to change front sprocket for a 17 tooth but still need advice on carb jettings and what pipes suit this set up,preferably for fast touring.many thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

How do you find the gap between 3rd and 4th gear with this set-up? Does the engine lose it's power in 4th gear when you reach a hill or incline, leaving you hunting for 3rd gear?

I have a casa 185 with an Indian Vijay Super gearbox, its the same as the GP150, SX150 gearbox except 3rd gear is 16,38 instead of 15,39.This reduces the jump from 3rd to 4th.I use this gearbox with 18x47 sprockets and it pulls great.

I changed 4th gear to the same as the sx box as it was an indian mk2 box that has a massive gap between 3rd and 4th,pulls well now,but will still do front sprocket.was thinking either an nk or franspeed pipe, any ideas?

PM pipes are quite revvy so you may struggle in 4th in winds or hills, going 17x46 will just make things worse as you wont be able to keep the engine revs up enough to keep in the powerband.Id suggest maybe a Franspeed/JL3 pipe if funds allow and maybe a GP200 or Li150 box on 16x46.If you want more lower end torque then maybe an Ancillotti/MBD or Gori box pipe.Im sure there are easier cheaper options people will suggest though :D

Thanks for that!been thinking about a jl3 for a while, they seem the best option.have had some tuning work done to the barrel when it was replated and it does have the torque to pull nicely up hills.

Sorry for being a bit thick, but I dont understand. The Mk 2 Vijay super already has an SX200 4th gear.If your saying that you changed it to an SX150 4th gear, how did you do that without changing the cluster and the rest of the loose gears ?

I doubt you're thick at all mate! The gear changes were done a while back when this engine had a rapido set up and it was done by a local dealer and I was told only one loose gear was changed.to be honest I've not looked at the box since as it ran better but now you've said this I may well take it apart and check the gears just to be sure! It is a learning curve after all!

You will find the Li150 box more evenly spaced out and you wont have that horrible big gap between 3rd and 4th from the GP150 box.I run the same box on a 200 smallblock mugello with 16x47 and with a JL3 its just right for me.Let us know how it went

Was definitely a much smoother set up than before, although jetting is a bit out now!she splutters when throttle fully open, have moved clip on the needle and tried main jets from 125 to 164 with no real change, ive had similar before on another engine and the fault was with the stator plate,ht coil i think!?anyone ever had the same fault?

Moving the clip on your needle will mostly only alter the mid-range and not when the throttle is fully open,

What's the plug like with the 125 main jet? Maybe you're moving in the wrong direction.

quick update.....
new stator plate fitted and timing now spot on,starts and runs really nice, only problem now is get to 60ish and the clutch slips really bad so another strip down is on the cards to fit a decent 5-plate clutch!one day....

What model Lambretta is it, if it's an early model have you drilled the handlebar on the headset where the inner clutch cable goes through.
Earlier Lambretta's used thinner cables than the later models, the later models had larger drillings so that the the later type thicker inner cables could pass through without snagging, fraying or snapping.
If the clutch cable is being gripped by the headset it could add to any clutch slip.

the engine is currently in a GP but will be put into my series 2 project over the winter. Have checked cabling and all is well, just going to have to strip it again and sort the clutch.
