Hey Bob, really weird, I found these tonight too searching for HT lead.....anyone got a recommendation for best HT lead maybe a bit less than £76!!!???

i thought that was the job of the CDI to release spark. if it needs delaying is your timing not correct?

The NGK Racing silicon leads are really good.... but to be honest with you not found a "bad" HT lead...

Exactly....

The theory is that the energy is stored for Microseconds building a bigger more explosive spark.

The size of the airgap in your plug and the pressure in your cylinder determine when the spark can jump across the gap in the plug and ignite the fuel.

This means that there might be a less than optimal spark with a longer duration.

The lead stores the charge in the lead momentarily to build a higher potential, and then discharge at the optimal point across the gap... giving a bigger and shorter spark

The differences in timing are momentary... microseconds, and are not going to affect your timing position to that degree.

But is it 70 odd quids worth of improvement?

It's poppycock. The energy for the spark is held in a capacitor and released by a transistor. As it is discharged it flows through the low tension winding and is transformed by the high tension winding in the coil.

That's for electronic ignition but the principle of points is almost the same.

It just flows through the ht lead nowt else. If it were stored in the ht lead it would need to be in another capacitor which as it is less than 100% efficient would reduce the spark energy.

Maybe they're using simplified terminology and the ht lead has increased inductance? In which case it would simply remove the higher frequency components and possibly extend spark duration.

Most likely outcome is that you'll be a little poorer.

Remember Splitfire spark plugs? Triple earth 'fingers' which claimed a better combustion of the mixture...........any spark will ignite it and the centre electrode had to discharge to somewhere so these plugs made no difference.

Stick with any good brand silicon HT lead and an NGK plug cap and you won't go far wrong.

A plug lead of any sort is to merely carry current no more no less. Theres major motor manufacturers out there who spend millions on R&D and granted cars dont use plug leads any more (direct ignition pencil coils) but if these were any good they would have been put into production years ago with the corresponding media fanfare that theirs were better than the competition. Someones making a profit of around £75 on their £76 p.o.s product..
