With the motor not running, in gear and clutch pulled in, with the rear wheel off the ground, should I be able to rotate the rear wheel? or have I a problem some where like stuck plates etc etc

it should move but likely with some stiffness due to inherent clutch drag, clutch plates could be stuck, but not necessarily a problem as they may just need freeing off if not used for a while..
if its completely jammed, clutch issue (could be as simple as cable) or gearbox issue likely..
I guess if you shove it hard enough it should move the crank/piston..
