hi any idea of a starting point for the timing on my avanti with varietronic ignition, before i put in on a strobe light??

Are you concerned about damaging the engine by starting with the stator in a "non-ideal" position?
I have never set-up a varitronic system, but I would start with the stator screws in the middle of the slots. It is hard to imagine that you can do any harm by starting from here and strobing it before making fine adjustments.

I set mine at 20 degrees at tick-over, should give me around 14 degrees at 6,000 rpm. Asuming I've read the blurb correctly.
