TS1 std reed valve with spacer?

Postby TVSi » Mon Nov 03, 2014 2:35 pm

Hi all

what would be the pros and cons of using a standard AF reed valve with a spacer( typically supplied for use with the Yamaha reed valve) and is this likely to cause any issues with frame clearance?

Also what are the benefits of "upgrading" to a Yamaha type if any?

Its just that I am rebuilding a TS1 at the mo and I have a couple of standard reed blocks knocking around + a spacer that I can use and though I better check first before putting it all together

all comments greatly received, thanks

The TS1 was designed as a 200 (66mm bore). in effect the 225 kits are a bored out 200. This means that when the reeds are open that partially block the flow of fuel to the boost port. The spacer pull the reeds out of the the boost port and allow it to work as originally intended.

The use of the Yamaha reeds makes the spacer essential as they are slightly longer. I have ran yam reeds with spacer for many years and on one engine still do. I do wonder sometimes what real difference the addition make. never really noticed it on the road, maybe on a dyno it might be noticed? I do think the yam ones last longer than the standard TS ones though.

Frame clearance can be an issue, many people have used one (or a combination of more than one of the following to help 1) different manifold (a few offer them, I've used MB ones) 2) shorter shock 3) offset cones. Personally never had to resort to offset cones.

Cheers

Thanks berniek,

perfect answer well described. I have a MB inlet manifold and some offset cones somewhere so all looking good for the rebuild :D

I have a spacer and MB manifold. Initially I tried offset cones but I couldn't get them to keep still. In the end I took them out and just took a dremmel to the manifold where it was just touching the frame.
