Is the throttle cable housing on the carb supposed to have some sideways play?

Can you specify the carb? Is it a Dell'orto SH1 or SH2, or some other make or model?

If you are talking about the pivot point that bolts the arm to the carb, they tend to be a bit slack. I normally replace the nut with a nylock and nip it up then back a tad. You dont want it to stick up at full bore
Just read this again and may have got this wrong. the cable goes into the adjuster screw and thats mounted in the aluminium. the other end may be what you are thinking about. The fork that the nipple sits in. If you have slack in the cable the nipple can slip out. If so nip the forks together with a pair of plyers.
Thats it Im guessed out.

A bit of lateral movement is ok, just as long as the slide is unaffected.

Cheers Guys. I had to adjust the throttle housing and the fuel tap as they were catching on the throttle cable. Bit of a potch but got there in the end.
