I started this about 5 years ago but moving house and other priorities got in the way ( I had to build a workshop after we redid an untouched house literally previously owned by a blind man bringing it from 1939 to 2017), I finally did the paint last summer and got it registered. It started life as a bare frame with forks , leg shields foot boards and a set of panels 125 l1 italian series 2 but I fancied a series one. I did a lot of repairs with my mig welder to panel work, The engine case is a Spanish 150 converted to 200 ( thanks to Jaime for the case at a good price), the rest of it came from parts fairs , ebay and scrap piles. with gp crank, electronic and a 200 barrel.I built everything with the exception of the crank, case conversion , and rebore done by Harry Barlow of Proporting fame, highly recommended. I did a big repair on the legshields but got a local welders to do the final weld after tacking with mig for nice neat tig , but they did it in one hit so I ended up with a lot of distortion and had to wire edge it to get it flat which is not pretty with a mig set. I managed to get a broken mark 1 horncast from dave in Newent and the same local welders DP2000 did a great job of repairing with repair sections I made on a load of ally parts horncasts handlebars rear lights hubs and disc hubs after murdering my leggies, I think he was welding gates the first time . I had the whole thing blasted wash etched and it sat a painters for a year but they were having problems but all was safe and I retrieved it had it powder coated irory on the wheels hubs cowls ,rims and forks, I was busy the next summer so I painted it outside last year. I struggle with multiple sclerosis so things get done in fits and starts. Thank you to the lcgb member who gave me an unobtainable at the time speedo ring I have forgotten your name. I had the frame and forks checked for free by John Benson Wilson in Twyning, again a highly recommended craftsman and enthusiast who has checked all my frames and forks and straightened the bent ones, he is also very reasonable and can repair rare bodywork to a high end standard with his gas welding gear which is ace for cracks and splits,He is a proper oldschool body man and panel beater, tinsmith and enthusiast . Symptom of a wasted youth.
Yes years spent watching craftsmen doing what I wanted to learn rather the boring stuff I was supposed to be doing. You tubes brilliant now and tools are very cheap.You never stop learning. Mind you the place the place worked is now junction 1 retail park, rather than a bastion of uk engineering unfortunately.As AEI It used to employ 7000 people before the war, there are about 150 in one old building now,
