I'm not experienced enough to give a valuable opinion, but I changed cam to gp type and fitted makino race (aye, whatever) shoes on my LI and a lad who's been around a good bit more than me said it was the best rear brake he'd ever tried.
Caveat: I got a mate to skim the brake surface on the rear hub. Maybe that caused a slight roughening which would help, or was it that it was perfectly concentric?

I use the cheapest Indian ones from Scooter rezzies, file off the high spots when fitting , adjust cable properly and they work perfectly. , front brake is a different thing altogether though and a disc brake is a must I find. Good luck
