Silver special aerosol paint

Hi All,

Is metallic cellulose paint still available to get hold of in a custom mixed aerosol can?

I'm after a can of metallic grey to touch up some areas of a silver special. The scooter still has its original paint so I'd like to match the this. I'm guessing the original paint was cellulose. The paint has slightly yellowed a little in some areas, would this be the solvents in the paint?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

you could get an aerosol from lambretta paints, but you'll be lucky if it matches, due to ageing.... far better to take a part off (bridge piece?) and get it analyised and a custom spray made up

Thank you,
I'll pick up a can this week. Kent paints did a good job matching English blue in cellulose for my S2 last year. I spoke to them today and they do metallic cellulose in aerosol. Ill see how it turns out. I'm only touching up small areas underneath after I've treated the rusty areas so hopefully it'll last a few more years on original tin.

I tried the 8060 from Lambretta Paints for my rusty rims and it's nothing like the bodywork silver so as said get a panel scanned for a match.

I took the headset top along to car colour services in Romford. They scanned the colour and found a match in a metallic silver grey for Hutchison coaches code pkx7b, got a Base coat mixed up in aerosol. A good match to the original aged paint should it be of interest to anyone for future reference.

Ok I've finally managed to get round to painting the headset.
The colour match is acceptable. Not 100% but will do the job for now. I'll try and upload a few pics if I can reduce the size direct from my phone.
The original headset looks a slightly bluer on the shading but compared with the horncast it gets better. Silver is never an easy colour to match at the best of times.
After a bit of wear and knocks I expect it will blend in better.

I'm having trouble getting the files smaller than 400kb on my phone so I'll have to upload some later.

Against the horncast it doesn't look too sad.

Out of curiosity what was the colour used to match the silver?
Was it the original lechler paint or was it custom matched?

Cheers....

Yeah, not a bad match at all. I could do with getting some of that paint too

Just realised I missed this post....
It looks a reasonable match, it's always hard to blend paints particularly on small surface areas.

That particular code doesn't appear to be easy to find?

I found this table and it appears to cross reference the PKX7B with the RAL code 9022.

https://me.nexaautocolor.com/media/2273 ... s_plus.pdf

Which comes up with this colour:

https://www.e-paint.co.uk/Lab_values.asp?cRange=RAL Classic&cRef=RAL 9022&cDescription=Pearl light grey

Which appears to be a plausible match.

As you are probably already aware the Lechler 8060 is the correct paint for the Silver Special.
There is no RAL equivalent for that paint. RAL 9022 is similar but is not the same colour.
As has already been suggested I would recommend taking a part of the scooter to have it colour matched to the weathered original.
I speak from experience when I restored my Silver Special a number of years ago.
I spent hours searching the internet for an equivalent RAL colour to match the original. Nothing exists.

I used this supplier and would recommend them.

Don't bother with the lambretta paints silver as it's nowhere near a match for the original. I tried some and it comes out way too bright. Since doing the headset I've had other cans mixed to match the legshield. As mentioned the lambretta paints silver was way off. The headset silver was slightly different to the legshields. The trick is getting the correct size and amount of flake in the metallic. I ended up using two greys. The first I put down was too bright but I found ghosting over with the darker grey/silver toned it down and blended in with the original paint. I'll get a pic up soon. Waiting for the warmer weather to get in the garden to carry on with the scooter.
