Hi All,
I am having problems starting my GP 175 top end, electronic ignition , 22mm Scootopia carb, timing bang on @19 btdc, kick her over all day will not start, use a drop of jungle juice, easy start, starts first kick. Done all the usual checks.

Sorry Ken

I thought you’d sussed the problem out with having, @ best, an intermittent weak spark from the CDI with the headset kill switch disconnected.

Almost certainly it will be either that (commonly called the coil) or the pick-up on the stator itself & substitution may be the only way you can find out.

The only thing I didn't mention the other day was that 'earthing' needs to be as good as you can get, almost 'military'....Ha!

If I could help more, I would. ;)

Take care.

Mark

Cheers Mark,
Coaster is going to have a look @ my stator, but meantime he has put me onto a chap called Anthony Tambs who is a expert all lammy electrics, just waiting on him getting back to me.
Cheers

Kenny, I hadn't realised it would start with petrol/Startyoubastard down the carb, that's a different kettle of fish. Your problem is most likely related to the choke circuit, have you checked that the choke plunger is lifting? If so, strip the carb and blast through all the orifices with carb cleaner. Also check the compression, there's another thread on here that makes interesting reading.

I had trouble a few months back with my scoot not starting and eventually found that the nipple had pulled off the end of the choke cable

is it a problem cold starting, hot starting or both ?

Colin,
This is a new problem. The carb stripped down and cleaned with carb cleaner and blown through with compressed air , choke working the way it should, when it starts no problem restarting it.

Dug out my compression tester, all very good @ 120 PSI on the kick start.

Mick sorry I forgot to get back to you. It will not start when cold unless I use jungle juice.

Sounds like a choke issue if not starting from cold and using extra fuel to start.

Try taking the bellows off and covering the carb' intake with a cloth or your hand (basically reduce the air so increase the fuel to air ratio).

If this works try upping your choke for a larger jet.

Mick already tried all that you suggested.

A new LT coil from Willenhall on ebay will cost you £8 delivered and that includes the K2 pick up. You will most probably ruin the old coil getting it off but the new one goes on very easy. Delivery quick. I ordered a spare one yesterday and it arrived this morning.

Hi All,
Running good, thank fook, There was a little crack in the carb bellows, drawing to much air. It just go to show that the little things can throw all to hell on a Lammy.

Good Kenny! ;)

It just goes to show that your suspect spark was not the culprit!

"Should have gone to SpecSavers!"

BTW. Later bellows are often too soft & can 'collapse' if the suction is too great, so watch what you put on in place... :!:

(You are welcome to any of mine but the old Innocenti bellows will be hard. Let me know...)

Mark,
There seemed to be 2 problems, no spark well very faint spark, and the petrol problem, sorted. Yes I need to go to spec savers lol. Thanks chaps for getting back to me, I will now have a look for the carb bellows.
