Axle nuts - Front drum brake hub

Just putting my Series 2 back to original, which includes a series 3 safer front hub. Bearings are OK, but I've put in new oil seals and brake shoes and checked that everything else is there. For instance, the inner spacer tube is in place, but it has some lateral movement, but looking at Stickys book, this seems OK as we are warned not to drive the bearing into a point where it nips the spacer tube.

However, if I tighten the inner axle nuts (see top hat in picture below) too tight, it locks the drum.

So what is the correct procedure, ie do I tighten these nuts so that the two halves spin freely with no sloppy side movement, or am I missing something

I use spanners on mine ,but I tighten them to just over finger tight.

The nuts need to be tight or your backplate will try to rotate on the link peg and knock when braking. Try adding a shim/ washer in the backplate where the axle spacer touches, this will space the two halves apart and stop the locking up.

/\/\/\/\ I`ve had to do that in the past - the thinnest of shims/washer is usually only required.
