Hi All, sorry we have 2 cracks on an engine case where the bolts go into it to hold the oil seal retaining plate, just wondered if chemical metal / araldite is all that might be needed

I'd get it welded.

Retaining plate = mechanical load.

I’m not contradicting excellent advice received in case my underbench spares get burgled(!), but it would be good to see a photo to judge. ;)

Does it retain the seal or the bearing?

I saw this posted on the other site and there was advice that said it is not 'load bearing' - I'm not sure I agree with that, I'd be inclined to repair it.

The seal plate locates the seal & bearing axially. In turn, the crank & sprocket drive is positioned via the drive side bearing with the flywheel side floating.

There is not a huge thrust load on the deep groove ball bearing IMO & I doubt that an alternative method or well engineered modification would cause a problem dependent upon the extent of the cracks which we’ve yet to see.

No point in elaborating on methods until then….

Apologies, my post was not really clear above !!

The issue is at the back wheel end. The problem is there are 4 bolts that hold down a 'square shaped' washer in between the brake shoes that retains the rear wheel oil seal, but also retains the rear wheel bearing in place. Its 2 of the threads which take bolts (in the case of this indian GP) that have cracked, but 2 of the other threads are fine.

If you haven’t already got it, ‘Dropbox’ is an easy ‘host’ to use for transfer of images. Even I know how to use it!

It's the same as any other forum - stick your pictures on a hosting site, Photobucket, Flickr and use the links in your post.
