Mine as gone all the signs are there white smoke, oily black plug and low on gear box oil, it's a fairly new probably less thanm a 1000 miles . I rebuilt it fitted all new seals and bearings top to bottom and used good quality, also fitted a muggy 200 , Gori exhaust etc etc is this just the way it goes or shall I look out or anything else when I rebuild it.

I wrote an Oily Rag article about oil seals a while back. I wrote about how Viton seals, often seen as a sign of high quality, can be called Viton if they contain only a tiny % of Viton.

I took my own advice and bought some top quality ones from Readspeed (not cheap) but they have been as good as gold ever since.

I might be barking up the wrong tree in response to your question, but all that glitters is not gold, and it is very easy to turn-over the lip of a seal whilst installing the crank.

Take it apart and report back with your findings.

Was the seal plate an alloy type as use on GP's , because they can warp and stop sealing , I had the same problem as you and kept changing the seals only to find it was the plate , changed it for a steel one and bingo , no leak

Is there any way of telling the seal has seated properly before putting all together and leak down testing it?

It is very easy to turn the lip of the seal, and you can't see if it's happened once the crank is in. Any tips for this?

As you will have it dismantled have you considered fitting a drive side bearing with the extra seal FAG 6305 2RSR C3

With the harder viton seals I warm the seals with a hairdryer and they become softer and slide over the crank far easier.

Update - I've finished the strip down the seal definetley the problem the top part is lipped with the spring partly out, the plate is steal and I used the bearings mentioned above when I built it.
The only thing that puzzles me is if I did the damage when I built it why it's taken so long before I noticed, anyway I've got the seals from Reedspeed so now for the rebuild, thanks for the help so far.
