Rebore specialist recommendations

Happy New Year everyone,

Can anyone recommend somewhere to get my LI125 rebored and supply a new piston, Searching the net Scooter Restorations can supply the piston but it doesn't look like the rebore, I may be wrong, and MD offer rebore but don't list the piston.

Can you not buy the piston and then take it to a local machine shop?

Where are you in the world? It might help us guide you to a suitable dealer?

Finally, are you sure you want to stick with a 125cc barrel. Why not upgrade to more powerful barrel so you are safer on the road?

I'm not far from Liverpool, undecided on a kit, need it learner legal really. Could buy a piston and take it to a place in Liverpool just a but worried if the bore needs more work than I think.

I have the offer of a 150 top end but would that make much difference

Frankly, no. The standard 150 barrel doesn’t deliver much more power. I’d suggest a bout 15% more power, and 15% of not much is still not much.

Since the 125 rule was introduced 40+ years ago, I have never heard of anyone having their engine capacity checked by either the police or an insurer. I have posted this comment on this forum and Facebook many times in order to promote a response from other members and still I get no stories of “my mate Johnny got done on a roadside check....”

There are lots of great kits for the small block engine that will give you enough poke to keep up with modern traffic without scaring you with a vicious delivery of power or the costs of upgrading every component on the scooter.

If you want more information on this from members of this forum, may I suggest you start a new post, as this current one may still have some life in it?

Grampian Motors in Liverpool would do the rebore if you have the piston.

The last standard rebore I had done, I bought the piston and took it, with the cylinder, to Barry Turner in Ellesmere Port. He outsources the work but whoever did it put a 3 thou clearance on it and it has been fine since. The clearance was for a 175cc.

Years ago, I bought a 125 Special from Italy. A previous owner had had a rebore to 150. It revved its nuts off as the gearing was still for a 125.

Grampion motors are on my contact list,good to see they are still going. Think that may be the short term answer.

The only reason I hold back on a kit is it then turns to carb, manifold....etc itching just to get ot running at the moment

Interesting to hear the high rev issue on the special...wonder if using the front sprocket would help?

Turners brings back some memories, 17 year old me would stop and dream every time I went past their shop in Rock Ferry , think the Ellesmere port shop is also gone now.

Turners of Merseyside, or Len Turners, moved from Rock Ferry to Little Sutton many years back. The Little Sutton shop closed maybe the best part of ten years ago now when they couldn’t find anyone to take it over as a going concern.

Barry is Len’s son but his business, which is still trading, is nothing to do with the old Len Turners.

Martin, the OP is on a cbt and wants to keep it learner legal, so has no option to kit it until he passes his test.

I have the answer... A 125cc cylinder with reed valve conversion, Lth inlet manifold . Reprofiled head with the option of centre plug. I bought two of these cylinders a while ago with intention of building a learner legal motor that has a bit more punch. Anyway the cylinders have had some serious work done on them to a very good standard.

Great to hear Barry Turner is still trading I'll look him up. I thought everyone was talking about the Little Sutton shop.

Those reworked cylinders are a work of art.
