Hi

In the middle of fitting my new Gt186 kit with 30mm l/h carb manifold I’ve discovered the shock is now too long!

Current one is an Escorts 310mm and it looks like I need something no more than 295mm ideally.

Bit of a bugger as I hadn’t factored it in to the finances so as don’t want to go too fancy. I read somewhere that an R6 shock might fit but I’m not sure about the difference in weight and whether they are a direct fit. I don’t want to mess around too much if it can be avoided.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received please!

I've got a gt kit with left hand manifold.I have a 300mm rear shock on it,nothing exotic just a standard S3 length shock.
Oh yeah offset frame cones will help too.

Unfortunately I have centre hole cones and they’re not that old so I don’t really want to mess about changing them again. 300’s might just fit I guess but 310’s sure don’t!

The R1 shock will fit and is shorter (300mm). It has an in-line reservoir.

The R6 shock comes in two styles. One with an in-line reservoir, and one with a transverse reservoir (which is only any use for cut downs).

Both need a change of spring (180 - 200lbs) from Demon Tweeks, and some replacement bushed at each eye of the shock. They also need machined-down nylon nuts top and bottom to secure the shock to the scooter.

Buy a complete unit from K2 Custom or Chiggy Chambers, and save yourself the hassle.

How difficult is it to strip a standard Escort shock and shorten the spring and damper rod ? if you're on a budget it might be worth a go.

My GT needed offset cones and some fettling of the manifold too.

However I came too that conclusion earlier and ordered a set along with a Scootopia adjustable shock (s3 size)

Ordered on Thursday made to order shipped and then fitted all in less than 24 hours. highly recommended.

So...

I fitted the offset cones and 300mm adjustable shock. I now have about 5mm gap between the manifold and the frame which is all good so far. However, when I put the rubber carb boot on the manifold, this now touches the frame. Not so bad that I can’t get it on but it is in contact. Will this cause problems? Not really sure what else to do as I’ve created as much space as I can.

I’m assuming that movement would tend to be the other way but if someone could corroborate that Id be grateful before I go out and break it!
