Timing help

Hi Everybody,

I'm trying to set the timing on my series 2, original 6v points ignition. Everything is pretty much standard, but when I strobe the flywheel it's firing at least 5 degrees before my BTDC mark. I've adjusted the stator as far as it will go but can't bring the firing point closer. Any ideas why it might be out like this, and what I can do? Suggestions much appreciated. Cheers Alex.

The flywheel cam can be worn.
This way, it fires closer to TDC.

Basically, you need to set the firing point 17 to 19 degrees before (left) the TDC.

That's really the problem I have, as I can't set the firing point any further round as the stator plate has been rotated as far as it will go. Thanks.

Can you file the slots out a little?

Try a smaller points gap, it'll still fire but be retarded.

Thanks guys, I'll start by reducing the gap before elongating the stator holes. I'm just curious why it's changed since the rebuild as nothing has been changed.

Ok, really not sure about this now. If I rotate the stator plate from one extreme to the other it makes no difference to where the points open. Basically they open at the same place no matter what I do. Any suggestions or reasons why? Cheers!

Have you fitted new points as I've read that some won't work as the cam heel is wrong? Easiest way to set the timing is with a battery and test bulb connected to the stator green and earth , watching when the bulb dims as the points open.
